The Environmental Health & Safety Department is seeking a part-time temporary employee (10-15 hours/week) to work during the remainder of 2019 to complete several projects, in areas including Lab Safety, Biosafety, Hazardous Waste. Schedules will be flexible but must be within core hours of 6am to 6pm, Monday through Friday. The EHS department will work with a candidate’s institution should the candidate be seeking college credit for this work experience. This position will not transition into a permanent position within the EHS Department at Dartmouth College.

Responsibilities will include:

• Lab Safety: Audit and update laboratory-related equipment and door signage. This will require the individual to conduct a physical audit of safety showers and fume hoods in research laboratories, and update online inventories of these items. Additionally, information listed on laboratory door signs will be verified and compared with the information listed in the research management platform, BioRAFT. Updated door signs will be produced and displayed as needed.

• Biosafety: Assist with biosafety data collection and the autoclave validation program. Data collected from biological laboratory profiles in BioRAFT will be organized into a database. This will include information regarding research with viral vectors, select agent and toxin use, and work conducted under enhanced biological safety level 2 (BSL2+). Additionally, the employee will facilitate the operation of the autoclave validation program, which entails delivering autoclave tests and instructions to select researchers and collecting and analyzing test results.

• Hazardous Waste: Conduct hazardous waste inspections and assist with waste room clean-up tasks. The employee will audit hazardous waste collection areas in laboratories and facilities locations and identify potential waste and report findings to the Hazardous Waste Manager. They will also assist in cleaning and maintaining waste facility resources.

• Perform other tasks within the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Department as requested.

Required Qualifications
• Candidates must be currently, or previously, enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Safety or Occupational Health Program, or a scientific discipline.
• Research experience of a scientific background preferred.

Preferred Qualifications
• The preferred candidate will have completed at least one year of post-secondary education and be returning to a post-secondary institution in the fall of 2019.
