Position Title: Human Resources Intern
Department: Finance and Administration

Location: Medical College of Wisconsin, 8701 Watertown Plank Road, Milwaukee, WI
Workweek: Fall and Spring Internships: available part time based on school schedule
Summer Internships: available full or part time based on school schedule
Compensation: Paid internship


Reports to: Employment Consultant or Talent Development Consultant
Directly Supervises: None


Under general supervision, assist the various functional areas of Human Resources including: Talent Development, Employment, Compensation & Benefits and Employee Relations on project work and tasks as assigned. May assist in other HR functional areas as needed.


A. Talent Development
1. Research best practices in Talent Development including: Orientation Practices, Training Delivery Systems and Engagement Surveys.
2. Assist in the development of new training and development programming including: researching training materials, writing training courses, and creating training PowerPoints and podcasts for delivery.
3. Evaluate and make recommendations to improve the content and layout of the Virtual New Employee Orientation (VNEO), New Employee Welcome Session (NEWS), and Onboarding Toolbox.

B. Employee Relations
1. Assist in the review and update of Employee Relations Policies through research of legislative changes and best practices.
2. Research and draft responses to claims of unemployment.
3. Under guidance of the HR Consultants, learn the consultative approach and conduct intake and evaluation of employee relations issues and make recommendations.
4. Shadow and observe the management of investigations and employee relations issues.
5. Assist in drafting communications on employee relations issues such as the Mandatory Flu Vaccine program, Zoo Interchange Project and others as necessary.
6. Assist in developing metrics and benchmarks through the creation of dashboards and reports.

C. Compensation, Benefits & Wellness
1. Assist in the annual compensation & budget review process.
2. Provide support to the job evaluation process including: conducting survey matches, benchmarking of jobs, assisting in annual compensation survey and internal evaluations plans.
3. Assist in updating job descriptions and coordinating the job description gathering process.
4. Assist in the preparation of presentation materials and make updates to Compensation training programs.
5. Provide scheduling support to the Faculty Benefit Orientation, Benefits Fair, and other Benefit and Wellness related events.
6. Revise and update payroll and benefits forms including: Summary Plan Descriptions, Funding Re-Allocation Form, Tuition Reimbursement form etc. and identify opportunities to automate or streamline processes.
7. Research and provide recommendations on legislative changes on healthcare reform.
8. Develop and coordinate wellness initiatives and communications.

D. Employment and Faculty Affairs
1. Research and develop presentations to be given to community partners on topics such as: interviewing, resume writing, cover letter creation, social media and job search tips.
2. Evaluate and refresh MCW Employment training offerings; develop new training programs and materials.
3. Research and develop action plans, communication pieces and training to better improve department understanding of veteran employment placement.
4. Research and provide recommendations on community partner organizations MCW should establish partnerships with and identify outreach opportunities.
5. Assist in conducting employment references, background checks, resume review and phone screens.
6. Research and provide recommendations on best practices in interviewing and employment.
7. Coordinate social media updates for the Employment Office.
8. Evaluate the external MCW HR website and provide improvement recommendations.


Perform other duties as assigned. May assist in other functional areas of HR as needed.

Appropriate education and/or experience may be substituted on equivalent basis

Education: Must have at least junior standing in a Bachelor’s Degree program in Human Resources, Business or related field. Master’s Degree candidates strongly preferred.

Experience: No experience necessary.
