As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank, ThinkTennessee brings leaders together from across the state who believe that facts matter and that moderate, pragmatic voices should play a prominent role in shaping public policy. Our work blends top-notch research and policy analysis with a drive to get this information into the hands of policymakers, the media, nonprofit organizations and citizens.

Legal Externship/Research Assistantship Program

ThinkTennessee law clerks and research assistants will have a unique opportunity to collaborate with our staff and board of directors, as well as other prominent thought leaders, to produce meaningful policy work.

Former Tennessee Attorney General Bob Cooper chairs ThinkTennessee’s board. Its president, Shanna Singh Hughey, is a lawyer who previously served as senior advisor to Nashville Mayor Karl Dean and nominations counsel on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.

Applicants should have excellent research and writing skills, a demonstrated interest in public policy and/or nonprofit management and a willingness to work independently on a variety of tasks.

This position is unpaid, but ThinkTennessee will support clerks’ and research assistants’ efforts to obtain academic credit or outside funding.

Position open to: Law students and graduate students in public policy or political science

Length and location: Law clerks and research assistants will work from ThinkTennessee’s main office in downtown Nashville. Summer clerks and research assistants typically work full-time; split summers are acceptable. During the school year, clerks and research assistants may choose either a part-time or a full-time schedule (a six-hour minimum per week is required).

Spring 2020: November 12, 2019
