Intrepid College Prep is a growing network of free, open-enrollment, high-performing public charter schools committed to preparing scholars to excel in selective colleges, earn professional opportunities, and graduate as financially literate professionals and positive leaders. Our Blue Chip Team currently educates nearly 700 students across two schools – Opportunity Academy, serving students in grades 5-8 and Independence Academy, serving students in grades 9-11 in 2019-2020.

During the 2017-2018 school year, Intrepid earned a level 5 growth score as measured by the Tennessee Value- Added Assessment System and was distinguished as a Reward School by the Tennessee Department of Education. School Counselor at Intrepid College Prep
Intrepid College Prep develops students ethically, as well as academically, to excel in selective colleges and beyond. A critical role in ethical development is ensuring that students have the intentional and individualized supports they deserve. The School Counselor will lead this charge by providing comprehensive, data-driven counseling services that utilize prevention, intervention, and assessment strategies. The School Counselor will work directly with students, teachers, and families at both Opportunity and Independence Academy to collaborate, build relationships, and foster a supportive school culture across the network.

Eligibility Requirements
Tennessee Certification in the appropriate area, with track record of data-driven achievement. LMSW/LPC not eligible.

School Counselor Duties and Responsibilities
Delivers comprehensive counseling services, activities, programs, and interventions critical to the academic and personal/social development of all students.
Run individual and group counseling sessions with research-based social and emotional practices.
Facilitate professional development for teachers to help them understand child development and how it affects student performance academically and social/emotionally.
Build relationships and collaborate with external education and social services professionals to develop appropriate agency services for students and families.
Develops a written, annual plan which is data driven and includes measurable goals which are appropriately scoped and sequenced based on the needs of the school and students.
Utilizes the Early Warning Indicators to implement targeted interventions for at-risk students.
Administers needs assessments regularly to identify and prioritize school and student needs.
Advocates and intervenes on behalf of each student whose immediate needs, concerns, or problems are impeding his/her academic and/or personal/social development.
Demonstrates program accountability using data to document the results of strategies and interventions that are used to improve student academic performance.
Partners with administrators, teachers, students, parents, and the community to remove barriers to student success and to close the achievement gap.
Collaborates with the Dean of College Completion to ensure a clear pathway for students to college application and selection.
Protects confidentiality of records and information about students and staff. Must use discretion and adhere to all state laws and school policies when sharing any such information.
Collaborate with Prepster/Scholar Support Team regularly to develop a plan to meet the needs of all learners.
Availability and willingness to engage in a limited number of evening/weekend student recruitment and parent outreach events.

Successful School Counselor candidates possess the following characteristics:
Intelligent, committed, gritty educators ready for challenge and the dogged pursuit of academic excellence.
Dedication to educational success for students of color and low-income youth.
Demonstrated evidence of the ability to reflect and articulate the lessons learned from past experience.
Experience with or demonstrated desire in leading Socratic Seminars and utilizing the Harkness Method.
Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred, but not required.
Highest commitment to improving services through collaboration, best practices, regular assessment and data analysis.
Effective communication skills with students, parents, and colleagues.
Holds a B.A./B.S. degree with a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0.
Speaks Spanish or has experience working with bilingual students (preferred).
Belief in and alignment with Intrepid College Prep’s core beliefs and educational philosophy are non-negotiable.

The position will begin in July 2019.

All staff members are equipped with the tools needed to succeed, including a dedicated work space, laptop computer, email, high-speed internet access, and all necessary supplies. Compensation is highly competitive; teachers are eligible to participate in the MNPS Retirement System.
