Position Information

$17.74/Hour
Performs maintenance and repair of electrical components as part of water and wastewater
electrical equipment, including well pumps and controllers, booster stations, and utility
installations. Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to
deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues.
Twenty-four (24) hour on-call emergency status. Position functions primarily outdoors with
exposure to all types of weather and traffic conditions; exposure to noise, mechanical,
electrical, and burn hazards, fumes, gases, dust, moving equipment and vehicles. Moderately
heavy physical effort is required to perform job functions including pushing, pulling, and moving
items weighing up to one hundred (100) pounds; pulling conduit and wiring from underground;
bending, stooping, crouching, climbing, and reaching above shoulder height. Sufficient clarity
of speech, hearing, or other communication capabilities, vision or other powers of observation,
manual dexterity, and personal mobility and physical reflexes sufficient to effectively and
efficiently perform essential job functions.
Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position
is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of
Las Cruces policies. Release of Information Form (49 CFR Part 40) required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Troubleshoots and performs the full range of repair and maintenance of large electrical
motors (in excess of 350 hp) and the controls for the motors.
Determines electrical requirements for motor installations and wiring schematics for
proper control operations.
Determines the schedule for how and where to install electrical equipment for proper
operation.
Performs preventive maintenance on programmable controllers at well sites.

Works with 24 to 480 volt single to three-phase electrical systems.
Performs preventive maintenance on well sites, motor controls, and circuits in and around
well sites.
Works on electrical construction for new projects; meets and works with engineers on
special projects; works with the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)
system.
Works with water operators regarding valves, chemical dosing equipment and systems
(CL2), and water projects.
Operates light equipment in the installation and repair of electrical systems.
Maintains records of work orders and completed tasks.
Provides direction and training to electrician apprentice workers.
Performs electrical repairs for the Gas and Solid Waste sections.
Works on stand-by for the wastewater treatment plant.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Equivalent to a high school diploma PLUS four (4) years of experience in the installation,
maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment, which includes at least one (1) year of
experience in the repair and maintenance of four hundred eighty (480) volt, three-phase motors
in excess of one hundred (100) horsepower and the repair and maintenance of the motors. A
combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of
Las Cruces policy.
Valid driver's license required; NM Class B Commercial Driver's License must be obtained within
six (6) months of hire date; Journeyman Electrician License (EE-98J) required; NM Level IV
Water Certification preferred. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with
City of Las Cruces policies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Considerable knowledge of: principles, practices, techniques, activities, rules and regulations
related to the operations and functions of the services provided; installation, maintenance and
repair of electrical equipment; safety and installation codes relating to utility operations; safe
and effective use of related supplies, materials, tools, and equipment; occupational and
environmental safety and health hazards, and safety practices; principles, techniques and
practices of effective and respectful customer service; principles of record keeping and records
management; business and personal computers and standard software applications; City
organization, operations, policies and procedures to effectively perform the required functions
and duties of the position.
Ability to: perform a variety of duties and responsibilities timely and accurately to meet
deadlines and to ensure achievement of goals and objectives; adhere to all applicable rules,
regulations, policies, and procedures related to the function of the position and department; use
appropriate safety equipment and follow safety procedures; safely operate associated hand and
power tools, equipment, and motor vehicles; detect needed maintenance and repairs to make
necessary operational adjustments on equipment; navigate across even and uneven surfaces;
follow established procedures, guidelines, oral and written instructions; perform technical
reading and writing; perform and verify mathematical calculations; read, understand, and
comply with a variety of specifications, diagrams, schematics, policies, procedures, rules, and
regulations governing related activities, functions, and duties; use sound judgment in decisionmaking
with routine operations; communicate appropriately and effectively orally and in writing;
operate a two-way communication device; compile applicable information, maintain accurate
records, and review documents and extract relevant information; establish and maintain
effective and appropriate working relationships with employees and the public; use initiative and
independent judgment within established procedural guidelines to successfully meet established
goals and objectives.
