Position Information

Fulltime regular, non-exempt South Central Solid Waste (SCSWA) position that requires the
operation of a commercial tractor trailer; loading and unloading equipment for the
transportation of solid waste to and from the Corralitos landfill.
Position functions 100% outside and is exposed to all types of weather conditions, noise, fumes,
dust, dirt. Safety shoes required at all times. Requires moderate physical effort including
frequent balancing, bending and stooping, crouching, kneeling and constant climbing. Ability to
lift 50 pounds from the floor involving items such as: grates and sand bags. Ability to
communicate via two-way communication device and must be alert to traffic hazards. Requires
writing and use of standard hand tools frequently during each shift.
Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position
is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations
and SCSWA policies in addition to the Release of Information Form (49 CFR Part 40).
Meeting or exceeding the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an invitation to participate
in the process.
• Operates commercial tractor trailer in local and highway conditions.
• Operates commercial tractor trailer loading and unloading equipment for the transportation of
solid waste to and from the Corralitos landfill.
• Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and identifies maintenance
needed to be performed by mechanic.
• Assists crew members in other functions when not operating equipment.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Equivalent to a high school diploma and one (1) year experience in the operation of commercial
tractor trailer. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in
accordance with SCSWA policy.
Valid Class A Commercial driver's license. Position requires an acceptable driving record in
accordance with SCSWA policy.
Must have knowledge of Dona Ana County and surrounding areas; policies, procedures, and
regulations, for the safe handling and disposal of waste; traffic laws, including Department of
Transportation (DOT), pertinent to equipment and hydraulics operations; occupational hazards
and appropriate safety precautions for operating designated equipment, for example, roll off
truck, two-way radio, and tractor-trailer.
Must have skill in safety operating equipment over rough and uneven terrain; two-way radio
operation and protocol; read, understand, interpret, apply, and enforce codes and ordinances
pertaining to environmental health issues.
Basic reading and writing abilities. Intermediate arithmetic abilities, including linear, square,
and cubic measurements. Must have the ability to interact diplomatically with SCSWA staff and
the general public in order to assure compliance with regulations, establish and maintain
effective and cooperative working relationships with others. Ability to perform repetitive, shortcycle
work and attain precise standards.
