This position is for Fall 2018 employment as an Engineering Peer Mentor with the STEM-H Student Support Services (SSS) program.

The STEM-H SSS program provides support services to students majoring in science, technology, engineering, math, and health science disciplines, many of whom are first-generation college students, come from low-income households, or are students with a disability.

Peer Mentors will serve as academic coaches and advocates, resource specialists, peer advisors, and role models to students participating in the STEM-H program.

Duties:
* Meet regularly with STEM-H student participants in a one-to-one setting to provide support and coaching. Flexibility is required. The number of required meetings depends on the students’ classification.
* Assist participants in fulfilling their academic goals.
* Assist students to apply for scholarships and federal student aid (FAFSA).
* Assist students to successfully navigate the university system.
* Be able to identify student academic needs and refer to the appropriate campus resources.
*If applicable, be able to identify when to assist the participant for a referral to tutoring.
* Complete typed progress reports within 48 hours of meeting with a participant and submit to the Academic Success Coordinator.
*Participate in information tables
* Attend all required trainings.
* Be able to work 20 hours a week.
* Maintain confidentiality at all times.
*Be majoring in Engineering (preferably in Mechanical, Industrial or Civil Engineering)
*Be responsible, dependable, honest and mature.
*Be friendly, patient and sensitive to the diversity of each student.
*Have passed all courses for the previous semester.
*Be classified as a junior or senior.
*Have attended main campus for at least one semester.
*Have knowledge of campus and community resources.
*Maintain a minimum of 6 credit hours and a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
*Be committed to work for at least one full semester.
*An ability to serve multiple semesters is preferred.

Preference is given to those who have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the project’s target population.
