Position Information

The Nature Center Assistant works up to 20 hours a week in a museum environment. This position is responsible for contributing to all aspects involving daily care and management of the living animal collection and exhibits in the Nature Center. This position is under the direct supervision and direction of the Curator of Living Collections. THIS POSITION INCLUDES ANIMAL HANDLING OF BOTH VENOMOUS AND NON-VENOMOUS ANIMALS, though new hires will NOT be required to handle venomous animals until they have been properly trained. The successful candidate must be able to lift at least 50lbs and be comfortable and familiar with basic aquarium maintenance and handling various species of reptiles, amphibians, arthropods, and insects. The Nature Center Assistant will help interpret the living exhibits and the Chihuahuan Desert to patrons and may be asked to assist with outreach and other aspects of museum operations. He or she should also be able to adapt to various situations and work with different supervisors. The position offers flexible hours within a Tuesday-Saturday, 8am-5pm schedule; must be able to work Fridays and Saturdays.
Science or biology major preferred. The Nature Center Assistant must be outgoing and able to work with the public, museum staff, and volunteers. Animal handling of various non-venomous animals, including reptiles and invertebrates, is required. Ability to lift a minimum of 25lbs unassisted. Computer literacy is required and the successful candidate must be able to handle multiple tasks and complete them in the allocated time. Applicants must pass a background check, as required by the City of Las Cruces.

Preferred Qualifications: Meeting any of the preferred qualifications will afford an advantage to the applicant. These include coursework or a major in biology, animal science, wildlife ecology, or other related fields, and bilingual (Spanish/English) status.
