The American Horticultural Society’s (AHS) headquarters at River Farm in Alexandria, Virginia, is a national showcase for gardening and horticultural practices. Once part of George Washington's farmland, this 25-acre historic site overlooking the Potomac River features a blend of formal and naturalistic gardens, including a four-acre meadow, a vegetable demonstration garden, and an award-winning children’s garden.

While working closely with the staff of the AHS Communications Department, interns will gain experience in all facets of the editorial and production processes for The American Gardener, a national, four-color magazine published in both print and digital editions. Primary duties include researching and writing short articles, proofreading and fact-checking, compiling an event calendar, and coordinating author and photographer submissions. Interns may also participate in related communication project such as book editing, website updates, social networking and photography/videography.

As part of a broad-based exposure to gardening and horticultural communication, editorial interns also participate with other AHS interns in guided field trips to prominent local gardens such as the U.S. National Arboretum, Dumbarton Oaks, and Mount Vernon.
Paid editorial internships with the American Horticultural Society are open to any undergraduate or graduate student of journalism, English, horticulture, or related fields, and to post-graduates with relevant experience who are making a career change or seeking additional training.
