Public Health Internship Opportunities at the Utah County Health Department

Chronic Disease Prevention
Non-paid internship. Potential project topics may include: Diabetes prevention/education, Gold Medal Schools, obesity prevention: increased physical activity and nutrition, and arthritis. Activities may include coordinating a campaign (Walk to School or Reducing Screen Time) and marketing, giving presentations, creating fliers, etc. Flexible hours needed between business hours of 8am-5pm with availability some evenings and weekends.

Injury Prevention Program
Intern will assist with events in child passenger safety (car seats), sit in on Safe Kids Coalition, bicycle safety and teen motor vehicle safety activities. Over 100 hour internship required. Daily/weekly schedule should be consistent with availability for weekend events. Intern must be at health department close to 20 hrs/wk between the hours of either 8-12 or 12-5 pm. Speaking Spanish is a plus but not required. Intern must drive own vehicle and mileage reimbursement not provided. More than one intern may be selected.

Tobacco Prevention and Control Program
Intern will become a certified Ending Nicotine Dependence (END) Program facilitator and help team-teach the END class with one of our trained health educators. END classes are typically taught twice a week from 4-5:15 PM; however we do now have classes being taught once a week from 4-6 PM as well as a class being taught in the mornings twice a week. Internship responsibilities will also help conduct follow-up surveys with END class participants. This intern will also help teach the Peer-to-Peer Tobacco Recovery Program (a smoking cessation curriculum designed especially for substance abuse and mental health clients) which will generally take place every Monday from 9-10 AM. Additional responsibilities will include training Tobacco Speakers Bureau volunteers and coordinating opportunities for these volunteers to gain experience out in the community as well as helping with prevention and tobacco policy efforts. Over 100 hour internship required. Daily/weekly schedule should be consistent with availability for evening and weekend events.

Work Site Wellness
Intern will assist coordinator with employee wellness program. Some of the responsibilities may include: planning, promoting and preparing for monthly 'lunch and learn' presentations, creating quarterly newsletters, blog posts, informational resources, assisting in the promotion and implementation of employee challenges and contests, attending health fairs, as well as assessing and evaluating current program practices.

Environmental Health
*Use our prepared "Asthma Friendly Daycare" power point presentation to educate daycares about asthma. Also included is environmental changes they can make to the daycare to make it safer for kids with asthma.
*Be involved in proper medication disposal education and participate in prescription drug take-back events with the SMART coalition and Use Only As Directed campaign.
*Educate school children about the dangers of radon in the home and encourage them to participate in the National Radon Poster Contest. (Fall project)
*Coordinate the annual Household Hazardous Waste Event (Spring project)


Department of Drug and Alcohol Prevention and Treatment (UCDDAPT)
Internships in UCDDAPT are limited to students from behavioral health programs only (substance abuse, social work, psychology, marriage and family therapy, and public health). Internships must be at least 125 hours.
Focuses on community coalition building, public policy, early intervention services, research and data analysis, and community assessments.
