Position Information

Get hands-on experience with the staff and faculty at Dance Place, a nationally recognized community arts organization. Dance Place is the most prolific presenter of contemporary and culturally specific performance in the metropolitan area, and is known as "the hub of dance in Washington, DC." As a theater, school and community resource Dance Place's multi- focus internship is especially pertinent for dancers who are exploring career options while in college or post-college. This is a rare opportunity to sample the real world of dance.

Internship Goals:
To learn how a nonprofit community arts center functions.
To broaden the scope of career opportunities in dance.
To further the dance skills of aspiring professional dancers.
The above goals are achieved through three aspects of the internship: administrative and facility work, participation in professional dance classes and staff mentorship.

Administrative and Facility Work: Interns work administratively 20 hours per week as the Dance Place receptionist, studio manager and administrative assistant to staff members. Responsibilities include interacting with the public, customer relations, ticket sales & processing, registration of students for classes, merchandising and inventory, responding to requests for information and general support to the Public Relations, Membership, Box Office, Production and Fundraising departments. Maintaining the cleanliness of the facility is expected. Interns play a prominent role in the ongoing business of the organization, receiving a bird's eye view of the totality of Dance Place as a theater, school and community resource.

Classes: Interns participate in adult professional dance classes offered on a daily basis at Dance Place including Modern dance, West African dance, Hip Hop, Cuban Salsa and North African Belly dancing. Interns occasionally participate in assistant teaching of children's classes if they hold that interest.

Adults (age 19 and older) who are pursuing careers in dance in college, post college or are hoping to make a career transition to the field of dance. Must have good knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel spreadsheet; experience in customer relations is advantageous. Be ready to work hard, have an open mind, and be flexible within a constantly changing environment.

Length/Housing/Stipend: Internships are generally 12 weeks long beginning each quarter in the Fall (August 24 - December 24), Winter/Spring (January 2 - May 30)and Summer (June 1 - end of August). Free housing for interns is often provided in a group intern house located across the street from the Dance Place facility. Located in an inner city, residential environment, Dance Palace is just a 7 minute walk from the Metro system.

Submit a letter of interest, one letter of support and resume detailing both dance and work experience by fax to Carla Perlo at 202-269-4103. For further information call 202-269-1600
